Pack a sack!

First I go to the local package store and buy a bottle of rot gut whiskey (think Wild Turkey) then I go down to the Greyhound bus terminal and get a ticket for a ride. I sit in the rear of the bus and spend the next five days cruising through every town not on the map.
Okay, there’s nothing perfect about that nightmare.

I haven’t ever really planned out a road trip outside of deciding where to go. I used to pack some clothes in a trash bag, throw them into my saddle bags, fill up the tank and start riding. If we took a van or car it was basically the same thing. Buy a concert ticket to a show in a different town or state and fly by the seat of our pants. Finding some motel dive when we arrived and just enjoy the sights along the way.
Plans can and do usually change throwing a wrench into the cogs of a pre planned trip whereas without plans said wrench doesn’t hurt as much. Throw out the phones GPS, tuck the trusted old atlas in the backseat and trust your instincts. It will bring good memories in the long run.
