Daily writing prompt
In what ways does hard work make you feel fulfilled?

I’m retired and it seems that my mind doesn’t recall fulfillment being an enlightening result of a hard days work. I felt frustration as the white shirts in corporate always brought grief down on the workers for not meeting the quota that would produce raises or bonuses for them but not trickling down to the workers.

Many times after work we would congregate at a local watering hole and after some refreshing alcoholic beverages the mood would brighten up and fun soon replaced the sorrow of another hard days work.

The end of the day brought sore muscles and worries of how I was going to cover the ever rising costs of everything we needed or wanted. I was left empty not fulfilled. Maybe I was looking at this all wrong throughout my life of labor.

Now I sit here and wonder about the daily prompt and know for sure that whoever spent their day writing these prompts shouldn’t be fulfilled with their job. There are other ways to be fulfilled with hard work and I hope one day you’ll understand my point of view. The hard work of others makes my day complete and fulfilled, case in point. The hard work of these four guys make relaxing after a hard day of work fulfilling.

  1. Very good as usual Ernie. My previous comment was supposed to go on your son’s poem.

  3. Great post and song pick, Ernie. I read where โ€œA hard days nightโ€ was one of Ringoโ€™s malapropismsโ€ฆ they had come back after a tough day recording, he flops into a chair, and looks at the others. โ€œWell, thenโ€ฆ itโ€™s a hard dayโ€™s night, isnโ€™t it?โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

I worked for a huge multinational company that at first was a great company, their highest regard was for their employees. But over time, the suits zigged when they shoulda zagged and they had their first-ever layoff about 10 years after I joined. Things went downhill from there and it was mentally draining, both from the work and the constant worry about pink slips.

Nothing I liked to do better on the weekends than to shovel, plant, and build. Use gloves and make sawdust. So satisfying. Now Iโ€™m into low-maintenance and flower beds have been replaced with gravel and much of the lawn with mulch ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  4. I like your POV, Ernie. I fell into the job I’m in and it’s been good for 16 years, but hubby and I are ready to retire. We’re planning on next year, but still working things out. I had a job, not a career, and that was my choice. When I was young, I wanted to be a singer. That goal changed though. My career was to be the best mom I could be, and maybe that’s old fashioned, but I don’t care what others think. It was how I felt and no regrets. I have a great relationship with my adult kids, so that’s golden. Along with having a wonderful husband. So, my job isn’t really fulfilling. I enjoy it and the people I work with. However, writing, family time, meeting friends here in blogland, and spending time outdoors are all fulfilling. ๐Ÿค—

  6. I’m sorry you didn’t feel fulfilled, Ernie. I think I was very fortunate. I worked with children and super colleagues. I taught computing, and I loved my job in every aspect. I came home each day feeling fulfilled and happy.

Thank you for taking part in ‘One Day, ‘ Ernie.
