This Learning Curve…

OCD’s a bitch! I like the idea of putting my poetry in a book and when one of my mentors (Dawn Pisturino) suggested it I was ecstatic about the idea and jumped in with all four paws.

I have been grading my failures along with successes on a scale that evidently is a super easy grade scale to pass and move to the next chapter of this journey. Well today I got called into the administration office and was given a serious wake-up call resulting in a failing grade and termination of contract about the size of the book I am trying to create.

I am happy with most of what I have accomplished and this set back does have positive points but the ass chewing I received from myself as I sat in that dunce chair was a revelation of both failure and instruction.

After countless hours, days, months of thinking I was getting it down and excited to being jamming into this new direction of life, I find I over did it like a hungry dawg at an unsupervised buffet event.

So as I left that ass chewing and reflected on this situation I’m facing while relaxing over a treat of coffee I come to the conclusion that the ink and pen need to be laid down for a hot minute.

Like anything I enjoy doing in this dawgs journey I went to excess and now the task of rethinking how to best make this look like something that can be acceptable to the public is upon me.

By excess I mean that most poetry books average 80 – 100 pages with up to 100 poems in them. My book weighed in at 180 pages with almost the same amount of poems. My over zealous imagination had me writing a book the size of a nascar while the market I’m aiming for is more like the midget series.

So as I go back to the drawing board of ‘Do it right’ I now understand that this setback will be a giant step in the right direction after I split it down and re-organize the poems into two books, which will demand that I come up with new book covers and titles for both. This will be both exciting and confusing as I recall what Dawn told me in the first baby steps I took.

“Go slow, take your time and do it right” Thanx Dawn for the great advice.

There is no sympathy needed for this mistake, only the consolation of knowing it will take me longer than expected but the end result is going to be worth it times two.

Another question was answered in that discussion this morning, I will buy the ten pack of ISBN’s and sit on them.

And the journey continues.

  1. Don’t be too hard on yourself, Ernie. I’ve been working on my children’s book (5th book) and am frustrated with some image glitches. I know it’ll come together, but sooner would be better. :) Anyway, it’s nice of Dawn to help you out. One day at a time – one step at a time. Wishing you lots of good luck!

  2. You’ve got this, Dawg! Don’t put yourself in the dawg house. Two books is a good plan. Love your imagery. 👍 🙏🤗

  3. Dawg this is phenomenal news achieved and you should be elated at your progress! An overachievement maybe or two complete works needing a little refinement (haha). Hopefully double the exposure, benefits, and fruitful recognition come forth. The pictures of school Dawg and baby Dawg are beyond precious (LOL)!

    Patience is a Virtue Brother.

Great Post and love the Images. They were awesome and spot on. If I may ….

My first book was just under 80 pages, and my second was about twice that length. Although longer books tend to look more impressive, the challenge is always getting them into the hands of readers. My first book had decent sales and received a few positive reviews, but it was a short and quick read. The second book, being longer, garnered only around three reviews 😰, despite being, in my opinion, much better than the first.

With my third book coming out at just under 170 pages, I don’t expect a huge turnout, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Follow your heart, Brother. If you’re pleased with how it turned out and satisfied with the results, trust that. I’m not sure I’m the best person to give advice, but one thing I’ve learned the hard way is that those you seek help and feedback from are often the ones who won’t end up buying your book or providing reviews. So now, I rely on my instincts and intuition.

    1. I’m going with the standard on poetry books with 80-90 pages. So that tells me to cut my book in half. If the pricing and size is to large it chases readers away is kinda what I learning. This is only on poetry from what I understand.

Ahh ! Got you. Make sense. Well the good thing is you have the next book almost done.
Either way, just make sure you are enjoying every moment.

  6. I’ve been thinking of compiling my poems into a book as well, but I have no clue where to start and it’s all so daunting. 😬

You should go for it. Don’t let fear hold you back from chasing your dream. Just like Ernie, I’m here to support you too.
