Sugar Free

Commercial Free Production

No, this isn’t a Diet Coke commercial nor is it promoting Coke Zero.

I have been a diabetic for almost eight years and have been blessed with the ability to go from 390lbs. down to 248 in a little over 1 1/2 years. To accomplish this feat I had to stop indulging my thoughts with food and sugar.

The sugar never crossed my mind as I wasn’t slamming twinkies down, But with a desire to live a couple of more years thanx to Derek {my oldest}moving in with me and dogging my ass to change, I was able to make the changes needed to survive.

By doing this I was able to get off the dreaded insulin shots and drop back to met-formin pills to help control the disease. What a relief to not need a shot every morning when I woke up.

Yes it helped but at the same time my altered mind wasn’t paying attention and soon a backslide happened and almost put me in the dirt.

I had moved up to Michigan from Alabama and after retiring I would haul the Amish around for spending change. Well needless to say the backslide came in the form of anything sweet to drink. I was slamming down liquid all day long and couldn’t stop peeing, the only problem was it wasn’t water.

I just wanted to sleep all the time and one day I decided to go to the local clinic in town. The doc there checked my sugar levels and threw the machine away, got another one and when it didn’t work told me to get to the ER.

My blood sugar levels dropped to 800 after three hours in the ER. That’s right, 800, the highest reading it will take. 100-160 is normal.

Doc said I should have died and he along with the nurses and other doctors were very surprised I didn’t slip all the way into a  hyperglycemia coma which I would have never made it back from.

Still with the Sugar?

How many lessons does it take dawg? I took it easy for about a month or so without realizing that I was still overdosing my body with sugar. Alcohol was kicking my ass along with things I thought weren’t “bad”.

So, give up drinking and white bread and that’s right the Coke Zero with it’s fake sugar that is actually bad for you too. Coke Zero uses several common artificial sweeteners, including aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K).

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that can have some side effects depending on the person and the amount consumed. Some of these effects are: Seizures, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, or skin sores in people with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder where ingesting phenylalanine is toxic; Headaches, dizziness and gastrointestinal disturbances in some people sensitive to aspartame; Possible risk of cancer, according to the WHO. I still struggle every once in awhile with drinking a coke or eating some pudding but that is rare and I am on top of the sugar game with my average sugar levels falling between 115 and 145, well below the 160 high line I try to avoid.

I am on Mounjaro now, a weekly injection to help with insulin resistance and it helps keep eating habits under control and water is my new bestie.
