Top Favorite School Subjects That Shaped Me

Daily writing prompt
What was your favorite subject in school?

I drew a blank on today’s prompt so I will post on this one instead as it caught my eye.

This doesn’t narrow it down to much as school is in session all your life but being the smart-ass that I am I will keep it contained to my sophomore year.

1 – Study hall. I had study hall as my last class and the teacher would usually disappear or hand out passes to release us from the classroom.

Many a day I would get a pass to the gym and enjoy life. I would spend the rest of the school day watching cheerleaders practice their devious routines,

Yes, my favorite subject in school was girls.

Ask any guy and they would tell you the same thing back before the internet.

  1. We never had an official study hall class in my high school, but I was allowed to take a “spare” when I was in grade 12 since I had enough university credits in the bag (assuming I’d pass all my classes as highly anticipated), and the vice principal in charge of scheduling was okay with me not taking the fourth math credit (you only need three math credits to graduate high school in Ontario) that my guidance councilor had tried to convince me to take, especially when I told him that I’d use the period to work on my assignments for my creative writing class. It was a pretty small group of us who had a spare during this time period – only five or so of us grade 12ers. We were told that we weren’t supposed to leave school property, however, we were also told that as long as we weren’t disruptive, we could spend the period anywhere in the school that we liked, and that there was no requirement for us to check in with anyone at the start or end of the period. Every other day, we had our spare as the final period of the day (we had an alternating Day 1 / Day 2 schedule, with Day 2 looking like Class B, Class A, Lunch, Class D, Class C – I still don’t understand why the order of our classes was switched back and forth each day). One of the girls who lived close to the school did just go home when it was the final period, and never got in trouble for it. I relied on the bus to go home, and so did stick around the school, usually chilling out in the library. I actually did mostly use the time for working on creative writing, and quite a lot of that the assignments for my class, but also at times my own personal stories. There were also days that I just read a book, or listened to music while playing solitaire. It was pretty great time, and I never regretted going behind my guidance councilor’s back to ask the VP (who was a math teacher himself) if I could just not take the unnecessary math class and have the spare instead.

    1. The years 10-12 all have a study period throughout the day somw having it first thing in the morning , others split up through the day. It was always the same time so more of a set schedule, did you go on to college Nicole?

      1. In Canada, university and college are separate things, and not an interchangeable term like in the States – university for knowledge based degrees, and college for skill based degrees. I went to university for my English degree, and to college for my teaching degree. The teacher’s college was a part of the same university where I did my English degree, but definitely considered its own unique section of it. If I had gone directly to a college after high school instead of university, I could have done a photography course, or a hairdressing course, or a computer engineering course, or an animal grooming course, or an early childhood educator course, etc. Here, college is about preparing you for a specific job field.

Did your highschool have 45 minute classes and 8 subjects per day that stretched out across the whole day? Mine had 4 subjects per day, with 1.5 hour classes, switching up the classes each semester.

      1. It’s severely underrated, particularly for how damn catchy it is.
Jani Lane hated it and said several times he wished he never wrote it. Record company forced him to write a single. Personally, I think it’s a W.
