Life’s Journey: Hobbies We Outgrow

Daily writing prompt
Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?

Time…what a concept. Time brings change and change brings growth so over time my activities and hobbies have been replaced with other challenges. As a child I learned to push the envelope past what was the normal and explore the unknown.

One activity that I have enjoyed tremendously since I was a teenager was visiting cemeteries and looking at tombstones. This started after my pops died, I would sneak into the cemetery late at night and drink beer, smoke weed and sit and talk to my late sister and dad’s markers. I used to let my imagination run wild after reading some of these and you can learn from them too. Case in point…

Lindenwood cemetery in Fort Wayne Indiana hosts the resting spot of Homer Van Meter. Who is this? He was a member in John Dillinger’s gang.

Or how about this one that I was truly impressed with.

I happened across this one day while enjoying a walk in Marietta Georgia with my friend Mary Jane. I was impressed with the story behind the marker. There is a fifteen foot statue here too. It is evident that the bond between these sisters was stronger than life.

This next one brought tears to my eyes with the beauty and compassion shown by Hank Williams Jr.

This is in Montgomery Alabama and worth the time to visit. This photo doesn’t do the site justice but I didn’t have any photos downloaded. Mine need to be scanned in and hey, it’s too damn early in the A.M. for me to conquer that challenge.

I kinda lost interest in this hobby when I happened across this little gem we have talked about before.

I haven’t visited any cemeteries in quite awhile. I don’t think it has anything to do with aging gracefully as truthfully there has been nothing graceful about this journey in time. Maybe it is because of the loss of family over the years I don’t know.

Other hobbies I’ve outgrown? Too many to list.

I enjoy visiting cemeteries, but when I go to visit my Dad and Grandma, it really hurts. My wife and boys struggle with it too. We didn’t go at all last year, which isn’t like me. Their cemetery is about an hour away, but it’s not the distance that keeps me away, it’s the pain and the memories. You’ve actually reminded and encouraged me to go as soon as the weather gets better. That’s my first mission.

    1. It took years to get over that feeling with my dad and sister. I dreaded seeing their markers but as time passed it went away. Seeing family is more of a personal thing for me. Seeing Henry Who that lived 1844-1903 is something more of a history lesson? Makes me think of how they lived their lives.
Good luck on this journey of pain brother and know the pain does ease over time even if differently for each of us.
Peace, Love & $0 degrees tomorrow!!!

Ernie, I truly understand the weight of those memories, and it’s comforting to hear how time has helped you heal. Each journey is unique, but we all move through it with strength. Stay strong, my Brother, and let’s hope Spring comes soon…

Peace, Love, and where the heck is Spring!!! 🌸🙏🏻

  2. I love old cemeteries, too. Some of the inscriptions are very interesting.

  3. I like cemeteries as well, Ernie. My husband and most of the family are buried in two adjoining cemeteries. Al Capone’s massive grave stone is just a few feet away from my grandparents.

    1. That’s another one I would love to see. Everybody form John Doe to JFK. it’s interesting to think of how life was for them.

  5. Hey, Dawg. Guess which pastime I enjoy, especially when we’re traveling through a new town. Walking through old cemeteries! I happen to live in a historic part of NY; there are some graveyards with headstones inscribed with dates going back to the 1600s Those are the best. There a gorgeous cemetery on the tip of Long Island in Montauk with an incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean. That’s one of my favorite spots but it’s a bit far and I haven’t been there since before covid.
Great read! Enjoy your Sunday, Ernie.

    1. That’s too cool. When I drove OTR I used to see those graveyards in NY city and would have loved going through them. I found a marker in northern Indiana that reads Forest Gump lol. I think I have only gotten back into the early1800’s as far as I remember. I’ve also seen Jimi Hendrix in Seattle.

      1. Very cool indeed! I was in for a huge surprise one day while visiting my parent’s graves in St. Raymond’s Cemetery in The Bronx, NY to discover only 20 feet away was the grave of the divine Billie Holiday. I got chills that day, for sure.
