Impact of Cannabis Legalization: Insights for Older Adults

Special Report

Medical cannabis is legal in 38 states and 3 U.S. territories as of 2022. Edibles and especially gummy consumption is on the rise with the ease of use and preferred among older adults over smoking the plant.

Cannabis sales topped out over $27 billion dollars in 2022 with a rise in legal states, recreational use up from 11 states in 2019 to 24 in 2022 and medical rose from 33 to 38 respectively.

Older adults 50 years and plus are leading the way in this expedition with 16 million “boomers” trying cannabis in 2022 up from 12.8million in 2021.

Gummies reached a new level of consumption last year when people buying chewables bypassed people buying flower 49 vs. 47 percent, but how safe are the chewables? Doctors and researchers remain undecided on this issue.

Highs and Lows

California legalized medical marijuana back in 1996 {28 years ago} and research has stood at an almost dead stand still thanks to our “Great and Powerful Oz” of a government. Plenty of research is still needed to learn the benefits and dangers of this miraculous plant.

Evidence points to relief of chronic pain, anxiety and sleep problems and be most effective in treating neuropathic and other chronic pain. Patients say it is like the volume is turned down on the pain. Edibles including gummies are easier to consume and less open to public criticism. They also are more popular than smoking flower as people shy away from inhaled products that can affect the lungs.

The down side of edibles are that you can overdose on them quite easily. Eating to many at once will not be noticed for three to fours hours later but then it’s too late and the ride is on. One way to combat this is if you think you ingested to much take some cbd oil to counter act the feeling, this is important knowledge for seniors as it will stop unwanted and unnecessary trips to the E.R.

So, if you are new to cannabis follow some simple rules and adjust your intake accordingly. First- start out with a low dose and wait a couple of hours to feel the total results, don’t over do it because you think they taste good. Keep a journal to record how much you ingest. This is your journey and no one else can tell you how much to take just like they can not tell you how much air to breathe.

  1. […] Buy them from a dispensary and you will get a even amount of THC in every piece be it brownies or gummies but remember this one important fact: No matter how sweet and delicious they might seem when eating them, they are LOADED! So eat them in moderation and there will be no problem with overdosing. Wait about 45 minutes to an hour and check out the effects it has and adjust accordingly. I also had posted a report on this earlier in the month, if you want to check it out “go here” […]
