Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush
My personal favorite band from Canada was formed in 1969 in Montreal Quebec. Front man and founder Frank Marino never got the recognition he deserved but ask anyone who listened to this band in the 1970’s and you will probably hear multiple comparisons to Jimi Hendrix.
All I can say is that the first time I came across their sounds was early summer of 1974 when a friend handed me a cassette of their new album “Child of the Novelty.” I was lost in a sound of jazz, blues and rock that mixed into beauty in my ears, and the art work on the early lp’s…yeah.
The Biz
” I used to always tell people: Business has no business in the music business. That’s how I really, really was. I’m still that way.” – “I got involved with what people got involved with in the Sixties.” Which meant music—he started off playing the drums—and also psychedelic drugs.
In 1968, at the tender age of 13, he “blew his mind” on LSD, a journey that ended his school career at seventh grade, and also landed him in a mental hospital. {a excerpt} from his interview with Richard Bienstock of Guitar World.
Bassist Paul Harwood, drummer Jimmy Ayoub, and Frank’s brother Vince on guitar are all long time members of the band. Frank Marino is the sole continuous member of the band. Starting in the late 1970s, the group recorded and toured as Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush.
They peaked in the 1970’s and appeared at California Jam II. Over time, the band migrated to a larger and more financially supported record company and achieved its greatness.
